This is from a regularly scheduled Everglades Bike Club weekend ride in Key Biscayne, USA, on a 10km stretch of road, and all the drivers know to expect it will be there in the mornings.

Let's say they go around 1/4th of the speed limit (they go faster than that for sure) and let's say a car on this road is occupied by 2 people on average (which is generous).

To get the same throughput with cars, you need to put one car on the road (with safety distances) for every eight cyclists. No way that's feasible in this example.
