Doesn't need an overly sharp base if you break up the soil first. When I planted beetroot I just used a stick to poke holes in the ground.

Less than 10% germinated so it might be a shit method. Moving towards perennials now though so I won't need to buy new seeds, got rhubarb, kale and walking onions.
