Consumer fashion is hard to gauge, but people like SUVs because Americans are getting fatter and older and it's easier to get in/out of them over a typical sedan. But American car fashion is irrational, they refused to buy station wagons at one point, then hatchbacks got a negative connotation. It seems anything actually practical is not cool, but only in one country.
