Pentagon Investigators Say Overreliance on [Palantir] Contributed to US Strike That Killed 123 Iranian Children (news.slashdot.org)

According to the officials who spoke to Bloomberg, some personnel inside U.S. Central Command leaned too hard on [Palantir] to accelerate intelligence analysis and decision-making. The Defense Department has reportedly made the software tool a cornerstone of military operations over the past year... Officials said some users expected Maven to flag stale records or contradictions in the intelligence assembled for potential targets, though it is not clear why they thought the system would do that. The Minab [elementary school massacre] site, which was cataloged as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facility due to outdated data, was fed into Maven with other candidates and came out as a recommended day-one target. Target-list work that once took hours was condensed into minutes.

A Palantir spokesperson told Bloomberg the company "is not responsible for the underlying data nor identifying intelligence deficiencies" and that there is no evidence its software was at fault. Two people familiar with Palantir's Pentagon contracts said the government keeps primary responsibility for the quality of the information that's fed into Maven.

I think the administration is lying, as usual. They have brains like teenagers and thought, "killing off their families will show them who's boss and they will cower in fear at our mighty might! And then the people will rise up and revolt against their wounded leaders". But in fact what actually happened is they gave the extreme right wing in Iran even more control by doing this. The extremists got to say, "I told you they want to destroy our civilization and take our resources" and the people unified and sided with leadership against the foreign invader.

    Yes. The only newsworthy thing about this is that the administration is sufficiently embarassed that it's throwing AI under the bus. Nobody in the rest of the world is buying this cover story. The US is a terror regime that deliberately tortures and murders civilians.

    They know it doesn't win wars. Israel doesn't want a resolved war. Only pure destruction of Iran, and all political power in US is Israel first. When cruelty makes the enemy uppitty, rulership just yells harder about how they just hate America.

    I'm not sure of that. The myth that you can win wars from the air is a tenacious one, often propagated by people whose salary depends on not understanding the fallacy behind it.

    Israel doesn't want a resolved war. Only pure destruction of Iran

    Israel and Iran both want to establish a (local) hegemony, and both are each other's greatest local rival. Both want the other exterminated or at least reduced to a vassal that poses no threat to their nascent empire.

    The resolution offered by the JCPOA (2015) basically gave Iran free reign to resume their activities, so long as they weren't a threat to the global powers. It's quite understandable that Israel would be just as upset with that solution as Iran was previously with the sanctions.

    None of that excuses the cruelty either side inflicts (directly or indirectly) on the people in their way. Imperialism sucks.

    This is Israeli lie repeated by genocide seekers often for public propaganda supporting hate for emotional war agenda, rather than any rational gains for Americans in serving Israel. It doesn't make JCPOA perfect. But pure demonic evil to force a war instead of any arguments for compliance improvements and trading Iranian prosperity for more certainty over nuclear programs.

    I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. I was talking about Iran backing Hezbollah and other anti-Israeli factions, which I'm pretty sure they didn't exactly make a secret of. The JCPOA was very much lacking in restrictions in that department, because ultimately, it's a local problem that the global powers didn't care too much about. This was definitely a flaw in an otherwise good deal.

    You mention compliance, so I assume you mean Israel's claim about the "secret" nuclear program? Yes, that one was a very transparent lie. Iran had very good reasons to comply and get the great powers off its case. They'd have been very stupid to risk throwing away diplomatic credibility by randomly breaking deals, even unofficial ones. They wanted the sanctions gone, after all, which is why they were absolutely transparent about their compliance.

    The alleged "secret" program had stopped in 2009 and been covered in the IAEA report. The director of the IAEA even said as much when Israel made that claim. They straight up fabricated a nuclear threat that wasn't there to goad the US (well, Trump really) into supporting their genocidal ambitions. That is absolutely evil.

    They could also very much want the right wing in power in Iran which will then give them enough acceptance in the international community to invade and feed the ever hungry war machine. Palantir usage and therefore profits literally rise if that happens, so it’s in their interest to ensure war as much as possible.

    Absolutely. Conservatives need an external enemy to take and maintain power. In the west, a large part of their power comes from the military industrial complex which cannot exist without additional conflict.
