Yeah and guess who was funding both sides and the start of capitalism? Play both sides is the best strategy.

The same people weren't playing both sides. There were aristocrats who saw the writing on the wall and joined with the proletariat partially so they could keep their heads and partially because they figured they could come out as the new aristocracy if they played along. Plenty of aristocrats made the other choice and got beheaded.
