Shotwell 0.33 open-source image viewer and organizer for the GNOME desktop environment has been officially released today after many years of work as the first version ported to GTK4.
The biggest news for the Shotwell 0.33 release is that the application has finally been ported to GTK4 for a more modern UI experience. The GTK4 port should improve compatibility with Wayland, such as drag-and-drop exporting, and overall utilization of modern desktop portals.
Apart from the GTK4 port, Shotwell 0.33 also brings a few enhancements, such as a help overview of the keyboard shortcuts, improved image exporting, reworked printing support, support for Toasts to replace simple dialogs, and support for opening URIs with the viewer.
On top of that, it re-adds all the drag-and-drop-based features, adds system information to the viewer mode, adds a “peek password” icon to Piwigo export, adds debug information to the About dialog, allows pop-up of context menus via keyboard, and improves tab navigation.
Publishing support has been improved as well in this release with various changes, including the ability to show the external authentication wait panel everywhere and replacement of the dedicated authentication helper app with a simple web server on localhost.
There are also lots of bug fixes in Shotwell 0.33 to improve things like toolbar auto-hide in full-screen mode, icons disappearing in slideshow toolbar, setting of desktop backgrounds, send-to when sending too many images, spacing in editing tools dialogs, and adding face names.
Also improved are highlighting of faces, matching of random faces with random probabilities, the slideshow settings panel, rating filter selection by keyboard, system information not showing the OS release, “discard” in viewer not actually discarding changes, and more.
