Macs run Unix under the hood, even being fully POSIX compliant iirc. So yeah they did come a long way from the old days.

Meanwhile Linux shifted to some other system stuff that people seem to hate, so the two platforms are much closer to one another in most respects.

... except the price of hardware, ofc! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Oh, trust me, I'm aware. I still prefer my Linux machines.

    But at work if the choice is Windows or even with much grumbling on their part, they condone to offer a Mac - that choice is clear as crystal to me!!

    It's a very pretty candy shell, and the CLI is just right there, even though you have no freedom to do anything, but frankly even on a Linux machine you would not anyway.

    Oh, but that second part is not true at all. I develop exclusively in vim and use git cli. Outside of work, most of my servers are headless; I primarily use my Linux desktop and laptop for connecting to those systems. The only times I regularly, willingly interact with the GUI are gaming and web browsing. And messaging, I guess, but even for that I used to use screen and irssi where possible. The only non Linux systems on my network are my wife's work computer, my work computer, and a few IoT devices which are all on an SSID with guest isolation.

    I'm not trying to brag - I never said I'm good at any of the above - I just prefer the keyboard to the mouse.

    Yeah that's... what a CLI is. Even if only used as a dumb terminal to an actual Linux machine:-).

    Also there is a MacVim native port of vim. And Mac ports of tons of Linux software, with package managers such as Homebrew sometimes making it easier.

    I guess my point is that ownership of a machine is separate from its OS - and as one definition of the former I am using root access. Like, you wouldn't put your work machine onto your home network even if it was a Linux machine, nor conversely would you potentially even be able to without root access depending on how locked down they had it.

    OTOH, if there was a strong need for such, you could theoretically place a personal Mac machine - say, your wife's - onto your home network (likely far less easily than staying within the same OS ecosphere).

    So even if you had a personal Mac (with root access) and a work Linux (without such access), the work machine would be the odd one out, despite being the same OS type.

    And by that style of thinking, Macs are "fine" imho (if cost of hardware were of no concern) - as work or personal machines. Even if you personally prefer Linux for home, which ofc is totally valid:-).
