It was the style of the dress at the time. See how the sleeve seam sits on her upper arm instead of up on her shoulder? It creates this "dropped" or "sloped" appearance.

No I know that, and her left arm is okay, but her right arm juts from her body at a weird angle that doesn't match, her elbow is impossibly low. Edit: especially because the reflection of her back stands straight.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres probably was using that 1845 AI that wasn't as good.

I mean he came to prominence in the 1790s and painted this in 1845 after he'd been the director of the French Academy in Rome - we can be confident it was a deliberate stylistic choice and not a mistake.

Okay he deliberately stretched and distorted anatomy, probably in this case so he could get that hand where he wanted it on the folds of the dress. Like modern images where the woman somehow has her boobs and ass both facing the viewer, only more subtle and with realistic surfaces
