They are regional, have been tested over centuries, and were largely abandoned during the past 60 years in favor of building types that depend on continuous mechanical cooling. Floor-to-ceiling heights of four to five meters allow warm air to rise well above the occupied zone, reducing mechanical cooling requirements before a single machine is switched on.

Historically, mashrabiya screens, whether traditional or engineered from contemporary materials, provided solar shading and diffused harsh direct sunlight while preserving privacy and airflow. Malqaf windcatchers captured prevailing upper-level breezes and channeled cooler, filtered air through the building’s core, creating natural cross-ventilation without powered fans. None of this is nostalgia. It is thermodynamics, engineered by people who had no alternative to getting it right.

Alongside these passive strategies, the building envelope itself must stop allowing heat to enter. That requires continuous multilayer insulation across exterior walls, thermal partition zones, and roof decks, specified to eliminate thermal bridging rather than merely satisfy a regulatory requirement. It means reducing window-to-wall ratios on sun-exposed facades instead of treating full glazing as a mark of quality. Where glass is used, low-emissivity double or triple glazing with spectrally selective coatings should be required.

A glass tower in Cairo is not a modern building. It is a solar collector with an enormous electricity bill attached.

Nice to get a perspective on the climate/global warming from Egyptians, they sure know how seriously you have to take heat and the heat island effect.

The heat still rises. It may be cheaper with solar, but it's not unlimited.

Heating a 3m x 3m x 3m (10ft) room would put 9m^3 of heated air above the heads of anybody in the room.

Putting those ceilings up up 5m now means 27m^3 of heated air is above your heads.

You're only using the bottom 18m^3 of the room! All that heat may as well be outside.

It's not free and unlimited energy. It's surplus that, if it's being generated, could absolutely be put to better use than heating what is essentially void-space.
