If the question of gender is part of a larger set of questions and not the focus the people that will be looking at the data might want simpler, easy to read data for that portion in which case having only one answer for the question per participant would be preferable. Of course we don’t know what the actual case is based on a meme, which is why I wrote “could be” appropriate instead of “is the only” appropriate option.
