I don't like the AI tide either, but this isn't entirely out of line.

The argument against it is that one should always use practical effects. Okay, I get that. But what about movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Space Jam, which incorporated live-action actors into cartoon worlds? Should that not be allowed?

Then the argument becomes "well that's fine if it's hand drawn." Okay, but you have a lot of anime and western animation where computer generated imagery (or CGI) was used for complex movement. It still requires human hands, but AI just kinda speeds that up a bit.

I don't think movies shot with practical effects are going anywhere. Drama is my favourite genre of film, and that requires no AI. But for sci-fi and fantasy, I think you can get away with it here and there.

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit is kinda an insane example to use here, most of that movie is actually practical effects. If you've never looked at a behind the scenes, I'd really recommend it, because some of the contraptions they constructed to have some of the shots done all in camera are truly one of a kind.

    Yeah, I had no idea, so, my bad. But I mean — you've got your all-film, no animation, no CGI, no AI movie. Then for a step up, you have some practical effects with some really brilliant trickery. I'd say like the first Star Wars, or, I suppose, Who Framed Roger Rabbit if that indeed applies. Then of course you have Disney and Japanese animated films, and CGI stuff like Toy Story and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within... and, I suppose, eventually we'll have more AI in movies.

    I don't like it either, but I feel like it's inevitable. I do not count myself among the ones who support this future or will go out to see these movies.

    I also remember how Bruce Lee was killed doing stunts, and then so was his son Brandon. If one day we can say "stunt performers used to die but don't anymore because we changed the way we do special effects," that would be a good thing, albeit with tradeoffs. I'm not trying to strawman here. I'm just a guy who likes movies. And while I do like some animation (mostly, from Japan — and it feels like they'll be on the forefront of this, though the big AI tech bros seem to be American or European), my favourite type of films are the ones with real actors. (Never mind that my all-time favourite film is animated. 君の名は。, or your name. outside Japan. I'm sure it has some CGI. Since it came out in 2016, I don't think it was made with AI.)
