In the 2007 film The Mist, the titular mist is clearly shown to reduce visibility below 1 kilometre, to be a dense blanket of humidity, and is slow to clear, meaning it is not a mist but a fog. (thelemmy.club)

Because the producers of the film couldn't afford rendering more that a couple meters away from the camera, they added the fog effect as a workaround. It worked so well that they re wrote the film around that.
