So it looks like there hasn´t really been too much advancement as far as game design goes. Just put someone in the world and give them some easy, realistic mechanics to play with. From another comment (yours?) , it looks like the modding scene is improving, which is really mostly fine way to handle things. The money isn't going to be there to make things exclusively for VR, so why not just adapt what's there already.
