Once upon a time explosives were used to remove the oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere

This essentially does the same thing, it's smothering the fire

    The man who really put that on the map - Red Adair - is shown in the movie Hellfighters.

    Worth a watch because it does a good job showing just how insanely dangerous it is putting out a well fire.

    There's some real footage of Red and his team in it.

    No. Not at all.

    Explosives create a vacuum, removing one of three components needed for a fire to burn, in this case oxygen.

    The jet engines do not create a vacuum. They also remove one of the three needed components, but it is not oxygen. It is the heat that gets removed.

    So totally different concepts.
