TIL (from a different part of the internet):

Windows 10 China Government Edition supports Mandarin Chinese only, region locked.

  • OneDrive / Microsoft Cloud is removed,
  • no Microsoft Store,
  • Minimal or no telemetry to meet government demands,
  • uses Chinese-approved encryption standards (unlike BitLocker),
  • Entra ID / Azure AD Support replaced with local directory services,
  • more localized control over system updates in Win 10 China Govt Ed.

I wonder if China asked to compile it themselves.

Kudos to them for removing Microsoft Store. Absolutely hate Microsoft for obvious other things but them forcing their built-in stuff by only being available from store is BS. More of a problem in Win11 than Win10 but I hate Micro$oft nonetheless.

The other day I had to play a 4k video on a factory-reset Windows10 laptop, and upon loading the video with Windows' new default Media Player, I got shown a missing codec popup, which led to a PAID codec download page of Microsoft Store for HEVC/H.265 (which cost about €1, dunno if price changes by region).

It was bewildering. Of course I downloaded VLC immediately and everything was great there, but the whole store just feels like a scam to me.
I tried to gather more information on this and even more bewilderingly, I came across this subreddit and this post...

    it's quite a read if anyone's interested.
