It seems like we have lost many people that were here for several years, who talk with great vitriol about us on other social media platforms, while on the other hand we pick up new joiners each time Reddit cranks up the thumb screws again.
e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1vqtor2/what_are_some_good_reddit_alternatives/ asks about a Reddit alternative, in which the top reply mentions the Threadiverse, but then the top comment is:
Problem of the Fediverse
is that it has too many redditors, and too few decent people. No matter instance you'll get the same sort of insufferable and entitled whiner, looking for a reason to screech at each other.
Because of that, the Fediverse is a good alternative if your issue is the Reddit administration. But if you got enough of this userbase (like OP, note how they talk about "Rude People"), it isn't.
And this is not a one-off - pretty much every discussion about Lemmy is this way. I found this particular one by searching for "Reddit Lemmy" and restricting the results to the past month.(https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Reddit+lemmy&df=m&t=h_&ia=web) where this was the first result after discounting those about the singer. Every time I do this search it always shows comments like this, as the very top (most upvoted) ones.
Personally I would argue that Reddit is worse in this regard in so many ways, but I suppose if you are comparing niche subs there with the larger communities here (bc we barely have any niche communities), then that does seem to track.
PieFed has solved the onboarding problem, but Lemmy / the Threadiverse has an enormous image problem. People try to respectfully discuss the topic but I would say that it is far from solved now.
