I wish my Sony DSLR has some open source firmware. I hate it has to use the Sony app to connect to the GPS on my phone. I hate that my phone sometimes put the app to sleep and I end up with no GPS info.

Canon cameras are the same for GPS data. Their app sucks and is barely functional that I don't bother. Half of the time it would fail to connect or fail to transfer pictures from the camera to the phone. A USB-C to SD card adapter is 100% reliable. I hate technology sometimes.

Yeah, it's infuriating how much potential they are leaving on the table here. My camera has a clock to put the correct time into the exif data, but it's not possible to set up the camera so that it does take a picture every few seconds or every few minutes. That should be possible right out of the box.
