To me, this is the result of years of social media companies operating with relatively little oversight. Governments are only now starting to introduce stronger regulations, but platforms like Meta spent years setting their own rules because there simply weren't many limits on how engagement-driven their products could be.

    yes, and are thereby killing any opportunity for us, the people, to solve the problem ourselves by operating platforms independent from big tech >:( Meta will be able to comply with any regulations governments will ever think of, their business depends on it; fediverse instances meanwhile...
