Never use food, especially sugar, as a reward.

"If you get an A on your test, we'll go out for ice cream!" NO, do not do this. Go to a movie, or take them to a park, etc. Food is not a reward, or a motivator.

Food is nutrition so we can do the fun things, fun activities. Food is not a fun activity in itself. That distinction needs to be made early and reinforced often.

    This seems weird, bordering on "masturbation is pleasurable therefore a sin"

    I understand not shoveling garbage down your kids throat as a coping mechanism to make them happy, but your take seems way too extreme as if you should never derive pleasure from a nice meal or treat.
