    Burton's Batman films are top tier, though. If I get a great director with a solid vision for the character/story, I don't care at all if they were a fan before hand or not.

    Yeah it really got the Batman atmosphere well. I wonder if it's because Batman was such a cultural icon that even if you "didn't read comics" you till knew who Batman was and what he was about?

    Possibly. Most people's first thought when they heard "Batman" at the time was probably still the '60s series, but Dark Knight Returns had gotten a bit of press already pushing back on that. But really, Burton's sensibilities just work with the character. Maybe it's whoever convinced him to give the job a chance we have to thank.
