It's been years with 99% of sessions ending with a tantrum and an abrupt Alt+F4, you can stop telling me this now

I just alt+f4 every time even if I am not getting frustrated just cuz it's faster.

Funny as hell seeing clips made on PC where the player falls off a cliff and knows if they can quit out fast enough, they won't die (and sometimes this is also used to trigger wrong warps to skip shit, too) but they use the menus to do it and aren't fast enough. Just hit alt+F4. Instant quit. No menus. Quick and easy.

Unless that's against the rules of the speedrun category you're attemping? 🤔 It would make sense to disallow it just for parity with console players. Some categories also similarly disallow "zipping" just because it's next to impossible to perform on a console, since it's dependant on framerate being at or above 60fps.

    Could also maybe be these factors:

    • Time it takes to relaunch the game may be longer than time it takes to do the quit out menuing. Clock doesn't stop when the game closes in any speedrun category that would do it on purpose.

    • Might be difficult for streaming/live events if it messes with the OBS setup. Having to reconfigure after relaunching takes more time, too.

    Yes, it does. Souls speedruns are timed by in-game time and in-game time pauses when you are outside of gameplay. Doesn't matter if it is a force quit out or a normal quit out or even a loading screen, the timer pauses.

    Speedrunners show the IGT at the end of the run and they use SoulSplitter a LiveSplit plugin.

    Here is DS1 Any% Force Quit World Record and, as you can see, the timer pauses.

    Here is the Former Zips World Record in Elden Ring and the timer pauses during load screens and quit-outs.

    Might be difficult for streaming/live events if it messes with the OBS setup. Having to reconfigure after relaunching takes more time, too.

    They usually capture the desktop in OBS instead of the game window (you can see the desktop in the DS1 run). Runs with Force-quits have also been done at GDQ with little problems.

    Souls speedrunners aren't really interested in parity with console players. Most (95%) don't run on console. For some games "Console" is a different category like with Elden Ring or there are only 3 runs on console in place 100+ like with DS1.

    Also you can force close on console. For Playstation it's PS-Button + "Close Application".

    For most categories it's disallowed (I think) because it's an out of game action, it's not using the game mechanics, but the operating system. That's at least the reason stated for Elden Ring speedruns. I couldn't quickly find a stated reason on the Souls speedrun wiki for the other games.
