Gif is perfect for showing small animated icons and simple pictures, not complete movies. The problem is more on the user side, expecting too much from a 37 year old standard.

Ultra audio and video compression for dialup internet. 250x compression with predictable results. You could speed up/slow down audio without changing the pitch, which was kind of cool in 1995.

Oh the adpcm codec used with a lot of the old POTS. I was thinking you were talking a more like for like. Image to image. Having studied telcom in college in the mid 90s. Yes I know that vox ๐Ÿ˜€
