For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Little Otik (2000), a Czech horror-comedy-fantasy from renowned auteur Jan Svankmajer, whose films Alice (1988), Faust (1994), and Conspirators of Pleasure (1996) we previously watched. The film centers on a couple who find themselves to have a child; they instead adopt a gnarled root and pretend it is a baby, and uh-oh, the fake baby becomes sentient through sheer willpower. Horror and humor ensue as the monstrous child developer s ravenous appetite. Yes, Svankmajer pretty much remade Eraserhead (1977), but with his signature stop-motion effects and dark comedy. This is one of Svankmajer’s best-known films, and is considered a cult classic, so let’s check it out.

After that is She’s the Man (2006), a teen rom-com that adapts Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night to a 21st-century Usian high school setting. Amanda Bynes stars as Viola, who hatches a plot to disguise herself as her twin brother and take his place at a boarding school, where she learns how to be a man, even as she falls in love with her hunky roommate. Uh-oh, what happens when bro shows up at the school and doesn’t know that his sister has taken his identity? Comedy, that’s what. This is by the best-known and best-regarded film of director Andy Fickman, whose credits otherwise include a bunch of even sloppier slop, such as, uhh, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (2015). This is really popular on Letterboxd, for some reason, so we’ll give it a shot.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
