He's been turning hard to his base lately, sacrificing the middle he always seems to manage to attain at election time. Reality no longer matters. The things he says are not about governance or truth, they are about image and manipulation. He now wants to create polarization. He's attacking judges, journalists, independent polling agencies, even the basic idea of government oversight; clearly setting up for a fight where he will want to muddy the water and attempt to invalidate or at least emotionally defuse objective evidence against him.
