Conditional "kindness" isn't kindness, it's infantilization.
Real "kindness" is giving people what you can, and trusting them to use it the best they can. No means or ways testing.
This is one reason direct cash transfers are so effective, because cash is no versatile.
But being helpful is very much conditional on the understood premise of the situation.
I'd be happy to help a buddy move house for a pack of beers.
Not so much if they are selling the furniture and using me for free labor.
That's not being kind. That's being transactional.
