You can still get paid to study though, which makes scholarships nice

I took it to be the act of engaging in scholarly study, not a financial scholarship for fees.

There is free education and free education. If I don't pay for university but I still need to pay for food and rent, I need scolarship to actually dedicate myself to my studies.
