Seems to be some trouble...

This shit is aggravating. Even had to break out the alt account I haven't touched for months.

    Same here with my instance at Lemmy.ca .... I maintain an Alt account at Lemmy.world

    True, but the coolest thing is it just goes to show another benefit of the fediverse. We're still able to post/comment on here with alts even when their servers are having issues.

    Also an opportunity to impersonate someone like a mod or something by making an account on a different instance using the same username of a known user and claiming to be their alt. I cannot think of lasting damage that could be done, but just pointing out that there can be also downsides that we should be wary of.

    That's the problem. If there was a well-known user named "foobar@lemmy.world" and that instance went down, that would be a perfect opportunity for some other random person to create an account named "foobar@sh.itjust.works" and claim to be their alt account that they are using while their main account is unusable. As we can see from this thread, genuine users definitely do use alts on different instances to deal with downtimes like this, so that is a plausible cover for an impersonator.
