Hi! We’re new here, not gonna bore you with detail, let’s just say we’re a daddy/stepdau couple, but we would love to know how to post videos or gifs here on lemmy so they would show in a community feed. Any advice is welcomed! Thanks! 🦄👄

I think you have to do it as a link to a file. I'm fairly new to Lemmy, but that's what I've seen so far

But when we make a link do redgifs, it only shows a link, not the actual video. Yet we’ve seen some people sharing actual moving videos. How do they do it?

Hey, there are two ways to post videos:

1: In order to see the video as a thumbnail on the main page when you post it, you have to convert it to the .webp format first. There are some hosts like pornhub and redgifs that sometimes work, but I haven't figured out why yet.

I use screentogif (https://www.screentogif.com/) to convert the video to .webp, then I upload it to catbox.moe, copy the link, and put it into the URL field when creating a post. Note that this will remove any sound. I have some more info on settings for screentogif to make it less choppy but it's really getting into the details. Let me know if you want me to post what works best for me.

2: Just upload an .mp4 to catbox or redgifs and link to it from here. It will keep the sound but the thumbnail won't show as a video.

Right now, this is the best we have. Note that some mobile clients like Sync and Connect do a better job at this then on desktop. If you're concerned about folks' experience, it may be better than what you are seeing on desktop.

When you create a post, at least on the website, there is a separate field for a Link, different from Title and Body. I've done that with redgifs several times and it works great. I get an embedded video player on mobile and on the website.

Nope, it’s still showing only a link. Could you lead me on how did you do it? Maybe screenshots? I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I past a link into URL section but it only shows a link, not video, when I post it

I think you're doing everything correctly. If you're using lemmy through the web ui / your browser then you have to click on the thumbnail of the video, not the '+' button for inline video playback. See https://files.catbox.moe/w8l51k.mp4

Most Lemmy mobile apps currently don't support redgif inline video playback. The only one I know of is Liftoff!.

I’m using Voyager and some videos are being played, some not, I don’t really understand the pattern

It might be the file type of the video, like .mov, .mp4, .webm, .gif, .gifv?

Voyager doesn't play any videos for me. It shows thumbnails for some hosting sites like Pornhub or EroMe, but as far as I can tell it doesn't support video playback (yet). Do you have an example of a video with playback using Voyager?
