Depending on what you're doing, try Krita instead. It's made more for drawing and digital art, but can edit photos too :)

I use paint a lot actually but it doesn't have a ton of functionality.

Paint.NET is paint with a decent amount of functionality. Can't do everything GIMP can, but it does all the basic stuff.
