It's actually pretty normal to talk shit about various states and cities. Sometimes for no reason at all.

If he had made that same joke about Hawaii I'd probably laugh. It's context of racism that makes it awful.

I'm familiar with the history of Hawaii and how we subjugated the island. I'm familiar with how we forced the queen into resignation to further business interests.

But let's not bullshit each other here. If someone says "I hate Hawaii" they aren't making a statement of colonialism. They just don't like Hawaii.

Right or wrong, Hawaii isn't a homogeneous population in so much much that saying "I hate Hawaii" can be assumed to be a commentary on a specific peoples.
