Hi UK. I’ve recently moved here and I find myself wanting to buy a puffer jacket (not normally a thing back home).

From what I can gather, the old Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jackets used to be the go-to recommendation, but it seems that line was replaced by the newer Pufftech range, which people don’t seem nearly as enthusiastic about.

So what are people buying these days instead? I’m after something fairly lightweight and packable that I can layer under a raincoat rather than a huge standalone winter jacket.

Would appreciate any recommendations (especially good value options).

Thanks!

How many of you use cash? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Generally just curious how often people on here in the UK tend to use it. Personally I use it 95% of the time due to privacy concerns, easier budgeting & wanting to maintain its use. Most people my age (early to mid 20s) seem to find the concept alien & I've noticed younger cashiers are absolutely garbage at calculating change mentally.

If you're pushed in it'll be no different to being pushed into one of those kid's pools. Are all these people being pushed in and drowning less than 3 feet tall so they can't touch the bottom?

If someone said "watch out, there's a canal pusher about", I'd say "yeah, my brand new Levis would totally drown in that dirty, elongated kiddy pool. The canal pusher is a murderer alright, murdering perfectly good clothes."

The shortest person I know is about 4 feet 10 inches. So, even if she slipped in, the water would only come up to her neck.

It's almost like drowning in a kiddie pool. Even if you can't swim, it doesn't make any sense to me.

And honestly good for them. I regularly hurt my back and neck now I'm older.

Especially with some places post covid or for security setting the tills behind glass windows it looks awkward as fuck reaching and leaning even a small amount but for 8 hours 5 days a week or whatever the shift pattern. You really don't know what that does to you until it comes for you.

Those over 30 mainly still bag for me but with my physical health, I wouldn't last even half a day. I would have to refuse on those grounds and have no doubt I'd get it in the neck from some customers, and management.

I often see Bombay sapphire for sale at supermarkets. I once saw an unopened bottle someone had in their house but I've never in my life seen anyone drink it.

Has anyone else?

At my GP I'm told to put only one thing in the form to book appointments, and the meeting is generally guided to be as perfuctory as possible. But tomorrow I'm heading to a walk-in. There's honestly so much wrong with me and I don't think they're touching the surface in the usual appointments, so if i can just kill several birds with one stone it would be nice.

To put it into perspective: the US has what’s known as the “Selective Service System” where it’s mandatory for every male citizen to register within a month of their 18th birthday for conscription. Now, Trump is considering on making the process automatic by December.

In their case, the current system works under mandatory registration which isn’t automated. Not only does it apply to citizens, but also residents, aslyum seekers and immigrants. Now, imagine the same thing happening in Britain, instead with Starmer imposing that...

The scenario is like this: suddenly the UK government in London refers from the database on where every British male who possesses BRP's, photo ID, driver’s license or passport by putting their names onto a draft lottery (where they'll be piled onto the MoD's database).

It would mean, in some time: you can be called up by the British Army saying you have to serve when the circumstances deem it necessary (failing to comply results in imprisonment) and they are not excluding those living in Jersey, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Scotland & etc.

Even if it were to occur or be discussed, what would be the response towards that from the public if out of nowhere the government is like: "all men ages from 18-25 are automatically subjected to conscription, no exceptions" under the guise of "for the king & country".

I mean, have you ever received a summons from the courts that you've been assigned as a potential juror (as in you have to respond and appear when being called, usually you're given a number and asked a bunch of questions) however is the chance on being selected low as being part of the 12 jurors at a trial? Does the overall pay depend on the type of case whether it's low or high profile?

For example back in 2020, in Minneapolis: George Floyd was killed by a white cop which sparked a worldwide protest regarding the BLM movement. That was a high profile one. However, before that: there are cases of "black kid gets shot for holding toy gun" or anything equivalent.

Like, what’s the point of its existence when that denomination is difficult to come by since ATMs don’t disperse them. I mean, will they still refuse a £50 note when paying for a £45 purchase? They go full counterfeit detection mode just because an individual has it despite that being the real one (not fake). Also, why does the Bank of England keep printing more of that when they know people barely use it anyway?

Ok, this seemed like a simple one, but damned if Google / Youchoob will give me a straight answer...

I'm putting up a greenhouse in a clay soil garden, so I want a nice concrete foundation (ring, like for a house, not a slab)

What mix do I need for that base, assuming it'll be underground / water and I'll put a row of block on top for the base to screw in to?

And... if it's easier than dragging stuff through the house, can I get away with just bags of postcrete?
