I grabbed a copy of the 3rd ed Basic Set, but its a little intimidating haha.

Any recommendations for me to bring to a oneshot night to show why Gurps is neat?

I recommend using the 4th Ed lite version (free), and using the Caravan To Ein Arris (also free).

Thanks!

This one right? The adventure is on the same site. https://warehouse23.com/products/gurps-lite-fourth-edition

And that's neat, Caravan To Ein Arris is also in the back of the book I have, I didn't notice.

Welcome to GURPS, there's a lot lol

That's hard to pinpoint for me, honestly. The thing that makes GURPS neat is how it can be used for any setting you can imagine, so it's difficult to try and encapsulate that in a single session IMO. I'd try to find out what the group prefers as far as setting goes and then choose based on that. If you're running it for strangers then just pick what setting you prefer.

This is a handy resource for a full listing of GURPS one-shot adventures. On that page you can see which setting each one shot is in for a general flavor of what you'd be running. Searching that site for articles tagged with GURPS will also get you some more results listed chronologically.

If you're REALLY intimidated or at least worried your players might be, you can always start with GURPS Lite too. Although, that's for 4th edition.

Thanks! There's sometimes too many generic systems and its hard to focus on why use one over another (still wanna try Cortex, Genesis, Fate, etc). It been a busy weekend and haven't had a chance to really sit and read through gurps rules yet.

Is there a big difference between 4th and 3rd? I'm guessing it's mostly revisions/tweaks?

  • In 4e, attributes are priced more consistently than 3e. DX and IQ are always 20 points to upgrade by 1, and ST and HT are always 10.

  • 4e doesn't have any kind of Random Characters.

  • In 4e, HP is based on ST and FP is based on HT, not the other way around.

  • In 4e, psionics is not skill-based and is relatively simpler.

  • 4e doesn't have language skills; instead, languages are separate, and there are four levels (None, Broken, Accented, Native) rather than the full 3d range.

  • 4e Tech Levels are more consolidated and some things are different. As an example, modern day is TL8 (the digital age), rather than TL7.

  • 4e has more damage types than 3e.

  • Mental disadvantages in 4e use a 'self-control roll' instead of a Will roll.

You should have a look at https://1shotadventures.com/ ! They have a variety of free one-shot stand-alone adventures for all kinds of genres, with pregenerated characters for each. It's all 4th edition, but the conversion between versions shouldn't be bad (and like GoldSeal said, 4Ed Lite is free!)

Oo haven't heard of him before, there's a ton here.

Any favorites or one you've tried that i should look at first?

I'm afraid I haven't actually run any- I mine them for ideas, but I've got a long term game I host, so I haven't had the chance yet!

The Star Trek one was how I found the site; Bombshell of Tomorrow is one of the few superhero one-shots I've found that has potential...

Cool, I'll peek at those first

Right in the book, there's a starter solo adventure called "All In A Night's Work". For a whole table, I would recommend converting free oneshot 4e adventures like the other commenter.
