IMO Reddit-style comments are far and away the best way to hold group conversations via text.
So you can never go back to an image you liked unless you remember something said in the post.
There is a save feature for posts and comments, the little star button. You can then access saved posts/comments through a dedicated page on your profile.
As you said, discussion is better
simple answer is because we came here from reddit
I don't agree with the characterization of this site that it's more for memes than for discussions. I come here for discussion and do not like memes at all.
and frankly when I think of imageboards, the first things that come to mind are nazis and pedophiles
