What's funny about the "metaverse" is that by the definition from Snowcrash, the internet as we know it is already a metaverse: a bunch of distinct digital spaces which users are free to "travel" between, and the system as a whole isn't owned by any one group. Conversely, Meta's idea of the metaverse is, by definition, not a metaverse because it'd be owned by them as a platform.
