Heckler and Koch and FN Herstal are the main German and Belgian (respectively) companies which produce small arms for NATO countries. For obvious reasons, they both lobby very hard for their systems to become the new standard which all NATO countries must either adopt directly or imitate to a point of mutual interoperability.
