This sounds like a difficult way to go about what should have a simple and cheap solution: all games with a network component must ship with the ability to create a private server.
Then the fans of said games could keep playing the games they bought their way free of cost to the studio. This is how everything should be once a product is purchased. It's actually the whole "software as a service" thing that's weird and bad and though pervasive now is only a couple decades old.
