I know it's here to stay, but I still think we shouldn't need it. Learning to read tone and sarcasm and detect trolls is a critical part of learning to read and socialize on the internet.

No matter how ridiculous a parody someone attempts to create of the grip being mocked, there are members of that group who unironically believes crazier things.
The 50's was only better for white men. Everyone else suffered.

I don't think it's about fear. I think it's about seething hatred and resentment. They have been made to feel stupid, intolerant, backwards, racist, etc. and Trump and the right wing billionaire owned corporate media have told them that they are right to be angry and resentful and definitely shouldn't try to better themselves in order to manipulate them into voting for fascism against their own self-interest and the interests of their wives and daughters and the country.
