Thanks to Power Delete Suite.
I actually run cupoftea.social on mastodon so I was already very familiar with the fediverse. The more platforms for it the better.

We toggled to 18+ and sort of let nature take its course by only enforcing TOS. I say "we" but in reality I was the only active mod on either sub, so I do feel bad for getting awkwardtheturtle banned by association (lol). After the fact got the "It’s not ok to show people NSFW content when they don’t want to see it.

Mods should not make malicious changes to their communities, such as allowing rule-violating behavior or encouraging the submission of sexually explicit (18+) content in previously safe-for-work spaces."

I've been working on a bot to automate crossposting from a given subreddit to a given Lemmy community. It's pretty basic and not very well tested but it's working if anyone wants to try it out.

For now it relies on the Reddit API because it has a handy streaming object and I didn't know you could just go to a subs homepage and append ".json" to the URL

Features right now:

• Watches a sub and posts to Lemmy as new posts come in
• Pulls images and videos from third party hosts and includes them in posts
• Copies titles and selftexts

With this we can close the "content gap" between Reddit and Lemmy, similar to everyone posting Digg content to Reddit as Digg died due to checks notes corporate mismanagement at efforts to monetize. Huh.

I've notified the sub and left a recommendation to join kbin or lemmy. Curious to see if they also ban me from reddit over this, not that I planned on posting there again.

What should I do now lol

Is there really a reason, for example, for there to be the distinction of "magazine" and "community"? When you're federating, the same features should be called the same, if close enough. That way everyone can talk with everyone about stuff and we all immediately understand each other.

Would also alleviate confusion for any new adopters.

^I'm pretty sure this is going to be impossible though, since each sides egos will likely get in the way :D^

Jotting some quick notes I've observed so far from running /m/scifi for a couple of weeks and getting to 3K subscribers:

• Even though most people will return to Reddit and it'll be 'business as usual' - the seeds of destruction are already in place.
• No one is coming to a place where there's nothing to read / think about / interact with
• The thing that made Reddit great is content - we came there for content. So when it comes to asking 'how can we grow Kbin?' the answer is simple: It's the content, stupid.
• Reddit has tons of free content - in the spirit of being a #chaoticgood, we can grab the best parts of that content and use it to make Kbin an interesting, thoughtful place to be
• Creating spaces with well-thought-out rules to encourage inclusivity, collaborate, and mutual respect. It's working out well for /m/scifi
• Redditors know what's up - they're pissed at Spez but there's not much they can do about it. They'll vote with their feet if we give them a new place to come to.

How am I notified if someone replies to my post? I think i've seen a few replies, but it doesn't appear to notify me.

Someone else because I ain't got time to mod shit! Don't know how people do this shit in their free time.

Apparently someone got into a debate with a bot in Reddit. Maybe it's not a surprise that the bot was anti-mod, pro-Reddit admin. Make sure you scroll down in the comments to see the second screenshot (it's a screenshot.of the same conversation but in dark mode).

One of my most used subs (Guilty_Gear) went private.

I'd like to contact the mods there and ask them if they considered migrating to Lemmy.

How would I go about that, when the sub is private and I have no idea who any of their mods are?

My only idea would be to ask around bigger Guilty Gear discords.

Is there an article someone could point to that explains how kbin, lemmy.ml, lemmy.world etc. all relate to one another?

For example do I need an account with both kbin and lemmy, or are they just different names for the same thing?

Can I subscribe to a lemmy.world ‘channel’ with my kbin account?

Still trying to work things out.

Interested in getting a feel for what people may be likely to do IF reddit reverses their decision regarding API access, or reduces access fees to a reasonable level and 3rd party apps remain sustainable.

While I know the chances of this are extreeeemely slim, until 1st July there is an ever so slight chance this could still happen.

From my perspective, the community harm is done, and those who have left prior to July 1 have left due to principles, not because their app stopped working. As such, I'd be inclined to think most of those migrators would stay here in the fediverse.

But would we see a mass exodus back to reddit if the changes were undone? It's easy to say no, but if it went back to operations as relatively normal, it may be easy to justify going back for some users.

I'd like to think I wouldn't go back. I've deleted content and account from reddit. I'll be happy here so long as there is enough userbase for some discussion.

Introducing the Lemmy Instance Assistant (browser extension)

Hey everyone :)

I started using Lemmy during the blackout, and I was finding it annoying to subscribe to new communities that I came across. I wanted to be able to quickly open a link on my home instance instead of copy/pasting the code, searching for it, and then subscribing. I looked around for an extension and didn’t see any * , so I started working on my first browser extension!

Firefox version is live, the Chrome version is still going through the review/approval stage. I’m working on getting it on other browsers as well.

This extension will let you set your home instance (https://lemmy.ca for me), and then it will insert a button onto community pages on other Lemmy instances (see screenshots on extension page). I tried to mimic the existing design for the button, and I included some popular instances so you can quickly copy and paste when selecting your home instance.

Why doesn’t it redirect automatically?

Initially I tried to make it redirect, similar to ‘Old Reddit Redirect’. This is still possible, but it might be a little dangerous to have it set up that way. Since there is no way to predict what URL a Lemmy site will have, we can’t restrict the extension to specific domains. This means that the extension MAY run on other sites, depending on how it is detecting the Lemmy site. A button popping up is less harmful than being redirected unexpectedly.

• As mentioned above, we can’t specify which domains the extension should run on since that’s not something we can predict. I’d like to improve the specificity of which pages the button will appear on, to minimize unexpected behaviour. As this is my first extension, I’d appreciate help with this while I learn it myself!
• Right now the button does not appear if you are already viewing a community in a different instance, even if that is not YOUR instance (ex. You are looking at lemmy.world/c/[email protected], while your home instance is lemmy.ca). This limitation comes from the method I used to distinguish between the community page and your home instance page. I’m planning to change it to use the URL itself instead of card elements.
• It would be nice to be able to jump to a specific post. Currently, it appears that Lemmy post URLs do not include a slug for the community/instance, making it challenging to implement something like this. I plan on exploring this some more (relevant thread: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/875)
• I want to add a button next to other Lemmy links in the post body / comments. However, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to do this and which links it should appear next to.

Other thoughts:

Some of the third party Reddit tools that I used the most were the browser extensions. Reddit Enhancement Suite made it a LOT easier to start using Reddit, and other extensions like Old Reddit Redirect (the inspiration for my extension) fixed other annoyances. While there are a lot of areas where Lemmy can improve, I think it makes more sense to implement certain enhancements through browser extensions and separate tools. That is to say, I’m happy to let this be pushed into Lemmy’s code, but right now I feel like it makes more sense as a separate extension.

(*) Also when I started building my extension, I didn’t see any similar ones listed. A few other ones have now popped up, and it looks like a lot of them were forked from this project. So if you don’t like mine, there are others that you can try :) Similarly, I’m happy to collaborate if you want to help / integrate my extension into a bigger project!

One option to reduce interaction with spez-ruled reddit is to use https://reddit.adminforge.de.

Eg: to access r/modcoord, use https://reddit.adminforge.de/r/ModCoord

Since the news broke regarding the forthcoming changes to reddit’s API and the impact that will have on the third party apps and tools many of us rely upon the mods here at r/blind have been working on an accessible option for those who either cannot or will not be staying on reddit. As talk of alternatives like mastodon, lemmy, and the like have increased we decided that it would be best to reveal what we have been working on, hence this post. Several days ago we shared this with those of you on our Discord server and have been asking for feedback.

This project is by no means finished or polished, and is currently operating on development backend code and a beta UI to allow for access to still unreleased features that our community needs such as up/down votes displaying state changes, and nested comments, read this as there are and will be bugs and outstanding accestsibility problems. However, the advantage of this platform is we control the servers, the UI, and can fix accessibility concerns ourselves instead of relying on a for profit company or the generosity of app developers to do it for us, not that the latter is unappreciated.

So please be understanding of the above and we hope those of you who decide to join and see what we have done so far for all of us, and please report problems as you find them.
