Is the overconsumption of "trivial or unchallenging" content online or on social media platforms causing our brains to deteriorate?

I guess the question I have is whether the negative things associated with screen use are the result of that screen use, or if those negative things are what cause more screen use. Or if they're mixed up together. Like, I've always been more anxious which is exacerbated by not getting out, but it also originally caused me to not go out. I used to just read, watch tv, and play at home, before internet got big. That's anecdotal, but it makes me curious.
