The tl, dr is that Veronica Lake had a 'peek-a-boo' hairstyle that covered one eye. It was as famous in it's time as Jennifer Aniston's was in the 1990s.
When women started working in factories in WW2 many wanted to keep their old hairdos. Except style and machinery were a bad combination.
Lake changed her look at the request of the War Department.
yeah, it was a weird story. Her subsequent career decline hurts.

Lake doesn't appear in this novel, but it is the story of someone who is very much emblematic of a particular time and who can never fit in again after that era ends. I think you might like it.
