And if you are backing up your content, are you checking the file afterwards to make sure it has all of the content you wanted to save?

I tried PDS and it actually overwrote some entries but then failed to save them, causing me to lose content. But it turns out I also tried from an older version.

Would love to hear about success stories from folks who have tried PDS, confirmed their CSVs have their content, and are now ready to start reposting some OC to the fediverse!

Hey, I hope it's ok to post something like this here. I just wanted to say thanks for the people here^^ A long time ago I joined Reddit and tried to post, comment and communicate about stuff I liked. Only now I noticed how much I became a lurker over the time because of the negativity at Reddit. Snappy comments, no real feedback but hate, sometimes even borderline insults... After nuking and deleting my Reddit account and switching to lemmy I noticed how much I missed it. People here are way more friendly and communicate politely. At least for now... Posting is fun again, all thanks to you all^^ That's my two cents. Thanks for reading. Love you all, keep safe. Cheers

I'd like to offer an alternative to the subreddit dedicated to my favourite football (soccer) team. I'm pretty sure none of the reddit mods are interested in doing this, and I've deleted my account there, so I'm not going to try to persuade them.

Where would you recommend starting the community if you were in my position? I don't mind doing the leg-work in the beginning, but I'm a bit too new to all this to know where to start.

I have made a magazine on kbin, but that doesnt seem to show up on a search of lemmy, for example. Am I missing something? I'm hoping to just get a visible presence on the fediverse, so anyone interested in leaving the reddit community can see they're not alone.

Firstly, they de-valued upvotes and the equality that every user's opinion had before they were introduced.
And secondly, they were so abundant that they didn't mean anything anyway.

Several subreddits had begun allowing porn and not safe for work content to protest Reddit. In response, the platform has removed entire moderator teams from the affected subreddits.

I've been thinking a lot about why I decided to come here and I know it started off as a "they can't make me use their shitty app!" while simultaneously using test apps that crash and navigating less content than Reddit. What is the primary motivation for all of this anymore? Is anger enough of a motivation to keep people away from a platform long term?

I have a feeling that most folks are more loyal to their communities than they are the company themselves - meaning that no matter how bad the corporation is, sacrificing what they truly care about is not really worth it no matter how poorly they are treated.

If the community goes away, THEN reddit goes away.

But if the only way to access their community is through some shitty app, I don't see it stopping many people.

A lot of what I consider useful posts were lost when digg changed over and chances are the same is going to happen to reddit.

I just made sure for example that this post is archived and bookmarked for myself because it is super useful for those of us who use a K400 keyboard.

Does anyone know how simple/feasible it would be to host your own instance of Kbin with little to no experience in such things? I would love to try it, but I don't want to start the process if it's beyond my capability. I've skimmed the documents, but I'm still cautious.

A few days ago I deleted all of my posts and comments from reddit, but today they somehow reappeared.

I don't know if that's a bug or the admins themselves are restoring content, but I'm sure they'd have incentives to do so considering that they make money from your content, whether that is from generated clicks to the website or from selling those data to other companies to train AI models.

Is anyone else having trouble accessing Lemmy?

In 1999, America Online's volunteer chat room monitors sued the company for back wages. Do today's hot Internet companies risk the same fate?

A script to help you make a list and export all subreddits you joined. Made by Tim Visée, not me, I just found it while looking for an easy way to get that list.

Reddit will die in a fire and i'm here for it! delted my 6 year old account on the 13th and i'm not going back. Period!

I see a lot of subreddits that are posting porn so that reddit cant have advertisements and therefore hurts their profits, is this actually something that hurts Reddits bottom line? Also, why can't companies like Adam and Eve advertise on porn subs, I feel like that would work

I've used PowerDeleteSuite to blank out this much karma over the last few days.

I made a habit of changing accounts every couple of years as an indulgence of mild paranoia, so I don't have one big powerful deletion to show off, but~ over 12k/120k cumulative across them all is pretty chunky.

Can the fediverse really scale?

I'm thinking about kbin/lemmy here, but my understanding is that every instance has to maintain a copy not just of the magazines/communities it hosts but also every other one its users subscribe to? So in a worst case scenario, the storage requirements would grow in sort of an N-squared fashion, would they not? If all of reddit wound up here, that's a lot of storage.

I guess the idea is that a smaller instance would only have to manage some subset of magazines of interest to its membership. But all it would take would be some bots sneaking in there and subscribing to everything, sort of like the kid who hits every button on the elevator.

I'm not sure what the solution is? I think it's good to have more than one copy of any given magazine/community kicking around in case its host instance goes dark/defederates/whatever. But maybe there is some sort of middle ground? Like perhaps a somewhat torrent-like scheme for backup where instances can contribute as much storage/bandwidth as is realistic for them? I'm not sure how that would work, but you would somehow want to ensure that there are a few redundant copies of every community distributed across all instances. And of course an instance could still go on caching the more active communities for practical reasons.

r/ModCoord: The admins in charge of demodded subreddits are mass-removing images of Huffman previously shared on them

the OP asked how are they gonna remove them all, so I replied they'll run a query for terms like "fuck spez". only to find my comment invisible, because they're already blocking it. spez protective word filter, it's active right now.

Edit: with Mintyytea's help, I figured out how to do it:

  1. Go to https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]
  2. Use the plus (+) button in the upper right of the kbin UI to add the article

I believe one of the Lemmy instances has a "newcommunities" forum, but I'm not sure if kbin has something similar

Thanks
