Hello guys! Recently re watched Das Boot (amazing film btw for those who haven't seen it, highly recommend) and that inspired me to install my SH3 from steam. The thing is its the first time I'm going to be playing on Linux, and I'm a bit stumped on how I can install the LSH3 supermod. The instructions for the 2022 version of LSH3 state that you simply run the provided .exe (due to this being steam proton I placed it in the game directory but this doesn't seem to be required) and run it. However I can't seem to figure out how I can use an existing proton environment to run an executable which is not the actual steam game for that environment. Can anybody help with this?

As a bonus question, because this game is quite old there are quite a few mods available for it, and the best way to activate them after downloading (on windows at least) is through JSGME. However I also cant figure out how to install that in the game directory. I have downloaded its installer but dont know how to actually run it.

I have included the link to the LSH3 2022 install manual as well as a screenshot of my game directory with files related to this post circled.

Any insight would be amazing!

There's a lot of blog posts and news articles being written right now centred around Microsoft's plans for updates to Windows 11, and potential kernel changes, with some thinking this means big things for Linux gaming.

Sorry to say, but I'm here to bring a more realistic take and to help keep all your feet on the ground.

quite relevant to yesterday's discussion.

... and it's much, much better than I anticipated. Proton has solved so many things. I've been dual booting on a smaller partition so far, but this has convinced me to wipe the whole disk and use it for Linux only. I might still keep a dual boot in case there is some edge case, but nothing so far has been an issue. I've been running Pop_Os! which I also have on my laptop since some year back. Previously I've also always had Arch on my laptop, but always stuck with Windows for my desktop just because of gaming issues.

From the article

Microsoft has officially announced its intent to move security measures out of the kernel, following the Crowdstrike disaster a few short months ago. The removal of kernel access for security solutions would likely revolutionise running Windows games on the Steam Deck and other Linux systems.

I'm going to be building a new computer soon for myself. (Going AMD for the first time, since intel microcode issue.)

I would say I'm an expert or advanced user, as been using pcs for 25 years and set up arch and slackware in the past. I have tried many distros and would like some feedback.

I mainly use my pc for gaming. I want something customizable, KDE ish, and without bloatware. A good wiki is a plus.

I think that i may end up with arch... is it better for gaming since it's bleeding edge and isn't steamos built off it?

Side question is distro chooser accurate?

I mean games you played / you are going to play.

My list looks like this for example:

What are yours?

Boxcars is coming soon on Steam. If you own a Steam Deck, and know how to play backgammon or are willing to learn, I would appreciate it if you played a game or two using your Deck, and then let me know your feedback. Let me know if you are interested, and I will send you a key.

Hey! Figured I haven't posted this on Lemmy before so should be OK to share here in case anyone else finds this cool/interesting.

This is a rofi plugin for launching your games, simple as that. I built it both because I think it looks cool and to make launching the game I know I want to play faster (no need to navigate the dreaded Steam UI). It parses games from several sources, such as Steam, Heroic Games Launcher, Lutris and Bottles, as well as some modded Minecraft instances (check out the readme for instructions).

The repo can be found here, and there's an AUR package available for Arch users.

Let me know what you think! I haven't built all that much but this my favourite tool that I've created (I am addicted to games).

Back in May the Steam on Linux marketshare returned to passing the 2% threshold and remained above 2% through July. But the August 2024 survey results are out this evening and point to a drop for Linux. The August 2024 numbers show a 0.16% drop for Linux gamers, landing at a 1.92% marketshare. Windows meanwhile rose to 96.78% and macOS dropped a tiny bit to 1.3%.

As we have seen in months past when Linux takes a sizable dip, it's correlated to a rise in the Simplified Chinese use. In August the Simplified Chinese use further grew and helping out Windows at the cost to the Linux percentage.

Anyone know of some libre tactical shooters? I really can't find anything, just wanted to ask the community if they knew of anything. Closest i've found is either Unvanquished or Assaultcube. At this point of my search, I'm ready to accept that there might not be a game.

Haven't bought the game yet, but these instructions seem legit. I found this link in a ProtonDB comment who claims to be its author/hoster: https://www.protondb.com/app/1934680#WRxwBwtv-Y.

Hey guys, Recently I wanted to play Claw but I lost my old cds. So I decided to get the game from Internet Archieve.

When downloaded I got these files from it

  • CLAW_2018_meta.sqlite
  • CLAW_2018_meta.xml
  • CLAW.BIN
  • CLAW.CUE
  • __ia_thumb.jpg
  • Claw_1997_Game_Cover.jpg

I have no clue how to use theses files. If it is possible to convert to an exe, then I might be able to run through bottles.

Thanks for all the help

I am trying to use gamescope and mangohud at same time so I ran gamescope -e -W 2560 -H 1440 -r 144 --mangoapp %command% (to run at 1440p at 144fps I think) as the launch option on steam but when I load into the game aiming goes crazy like 100x sensitivity but cursor movement (like in setting etc is normal). Is the command wrong I also hit win+f to make full screen. Is this the right way to use gamescope?

  • nvidia gpu
  • endeavoros

Thanks

So both Sway and Hyprland now support Waylands' tearing protocol. I was wondering whether it is possible to create window rules for these WMs that allow tearing in all games launched via Steam. Something like: For Sway for_window [class="steam_app_*"] allow_tearing yes

and for Hyprland windowrulev2 = immediate, class:^(steam_app_*)$

Does anybody know whether something like this would work? You know, instead of having to create an entry for every single game.

Edit: As mranderson17 said, allow tearing isn't in the latest release versions of Sway or Hyprland at the time of writing.

Edit2: mranderson17 gave what could possibly be the right answer:

For Sway for_window [class="steam_app_.*"] allow_tearing yes

For Hyprland (maybe) windowrulev2 = immediate, class:^(steam_app_.*)$

I haven't tested it yet. But unless you think he's wrong give him your "thumbs up".

I recently spent some time with the Framework 13 laptop, evaluating it with the new Intel Core Ultra 7 processor and the AMD Ryzen 7 7480U. It felt like the perfect opportunity to test how a handful of games ran on Windows 11 and Fedora 40. I was genuinely surprised by the results!

...

The Framework 13 is perfectly capable of gaming even with its integrated graphics, provided you’re willing to compromise by lowering the resolution and quality presets for more demanding games. (It’s also a testament to how far AMD’s APUs have come in the past decade.)

Summary of results:

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Linux wins
  • Total War: Warhammer III: Windows wins
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Linux wins
  • Forza Horizon 5: Windows wins

These results are an interesting slice of the Linux vs Windows gaming picture, but certainly not representative of the entire landscape. A few shorts years ago, however, I never would have dreamed I’d be writing an article where even two games on Linux are outperforming their Windows counterparts.
