After six months, we have finally gotten $1122 through to Maha! This has been incredibly difficult due to multiple issues with money transfers to Iraq. She currently has access to $615 in cash.

Unfortunately, Maha’s situation has become increasingly dangerous due Israel’s war on Iran. Additionally, she is at high risk of her family discovering her transness. She is in constant danger and needs to find safety as soon as possible.

At this point, a Canadian visa will be extremely difficult to obtain in a timely fashion. We are considering other options at the moment — namely Argentina and China. If anyone knows any leads, connections, or options for work, healthcare, and asylum — please reach out. The situation has been very difficult and stressful for Maha and we need all the help we can get.

In addition to her travel expenses, Maha will also be using the funds we raise to afford her daily survival. She needs $800-900 monthly to cover rent, food, medication, transportation, and utilities; and she has been heavily overworking herself trying to cover these expenses on her own while still often having to go without food and essential medical treatment. This has been hugely detrimental to her health. We need to raise at least $400-500 for her monthly for her to be able to live comfortably without having to overexert herself to meet her basic needs.

My friend has been living under the shadow of looming threat of eviction, every single day, every single month. It has been a never ending cycle and struggle for them. Thanks to mutual aid they have survived the past 4 years. Being very disabled, traumatized, Black, autistic and having no irl support is incredibly difficult. Being as disabled as they are now, we aren’t sure if they can survive another homelessness.

We are raising for gas and failing. the bill is $1273, due on the 21st, shuts of 22nd. Mem’s water had shut off for a day and an half and it was really bad. Through their + friend’s fundraising efforts they were able to stop electric from going at least, but gas is not. Budging. At. All.

Ever since Mem were able to find this place in January, they have been snowed in, hungry, having no appropriate clothing, not able to clean themselves or their living space, rest or eating near a sustainable amount. Now dealing with ant infestation, clutter and increasing fatigue.

After much thoughtful consideration, she has decided that she’s not leaving Iraq asap since she only has a year left of college, this might provide a more stable future for her. She will try her best to bite the bullet a bit longer. Even if she wanted to leave for Canada asap, she was told by a friend that her brother said, if she’s leaving the country he will kill her. Because killing her will be better than having the family and his personal life be filled with shame…….. An extremely suffocating and horrific situation. This all makes everything even more dangerous, difficult, and makes it so much more planning has to be involved for this to work out. We sincerely appreciate all of your support.

So, we have decided to wire all of the funds raised to her (~$2640 that has deposited into the bank as if 3/26/2025) so Maha can survive off of one job while she is finishing college. She is at a high risk for— everything, right now she’s working three jobs, in college full time and can only get 3-4 hours of sleep per night. Not to mention she’s still recovering from cancer, having multiple chronic conditions, and disability. She’s running on fumes, and this fund will make sure she can afford to sleep at night and continue to stay alive!

As if 4/18/2025 we are still figuring out ways to get the money to her as Moneygram isn't operational, Western Union isn't working and bank wiring takes months if it works.

Please. If you are able to help Maha secure a work visa in Canada so that she may be able to leave Iraq without finishing college first, reach out! If we can help her secure a job, that would be of great support to my friend’s survival and future, with that sort of help she can theoretically get to Canada in a month. She can work any white collar jobs, carpentry work, and anything that won’t be in a hot environment or asks her to do heavy lifting. She is an interior designer and proficient in Autocad, and is skilled in leadership, coordination, and problem solving. Over the years she has been teaching classmates and friends classroom concepts, making her a skilled educator. She’s fluent in Arabic and English, and can teach Arabic.
