Huh I never thought about this. This is something I'll have to do some research on, thanks.

I agree, I haven't felt like there's any reason for these accounts to flag me.

I've seen Mailbox be floated around, I'll definitely give it a look. Thank you

Besides their controversies and responses I'm not really a huge fan of their shift to a large suite. Its feeling very google adjacent and I don't want to put my eggs all in one basket again. While they're really convenient and easy to use, I just think they're not for me and my needs anymore.

They offer a very convenient suite, so if you feel it works for you, no judgment here. The response you linked is kinda nice to take accountability for supporting (in a way) a controversial creator. Unfortunately it's not enough for me. They openly support Trump (which I understand is a personal preference) and I was starting to get uncomfortable with how much their suite began to feel a lot like google. I dont really want to put all of my eggs in one basket again, y'know?

Ive been really considering Tuta as my next choice. Do you find it difficult or easy to use for your accounts like bills/finance/important?

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into this

Thats what I was thinking too. I was considering opening a ticket with my bank but trying to do that with sites like Paypal and my phone company are extra hassles since their customer services feel non-existant.

Its more of a personal thing. Theyre fine. I started to not like that they've become a, I'm not sure of the right term, but a google-like hub where I store all my info. (Email, drive, VPN, meets, etc.). Plus I dont want to support a company that aligns themselves with far-right ideologies. So it is a personal thing, but they work well enough.

I switched from Gmail to Proton, but now with everything coming out about Proton I'm switching from them too. I started using Posteo which I like but a lot of my accounts having to do with money and finance (including my bank) aren't accepting the Posteo email. They have rejected it over and over and even locked me out stating that I was hacked.

Do you guys have any recommendations for email providers to use that also won't send red flags to my more official accounts?

If it helps, I'm US-based.

That's fair. It would make sense for it to be consistent whether I watched it illegally through YouTube or the Stremio combo. Ah well, looks like I continue to pirate alone.

[-] nefarioushoneybee@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 months ago

Ok second question in response. So what would be the difference then of consuming copyrighted media uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo before they're taken down because of violations? Would that also mean I violated the law by streaming it from an unintended source even though those sources are legit? (YouTube/Vimeo)

[-] nefarioushoneybee@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 months ago

This makes a lot of sense. I didn't think about the licensing of channels. Seems like thats a super simple, black-and-white way to say "yeah its illegal". Thank you.

Preface: I personally don't care if it's legal or not, I'm gonna do it anyway. But, I wanted to pose the question here to people who are smarter than me to get your opinions. Plus, my partner is completely anti-piracy so I can only enjoy it by myself and it makes me kind of sad to do so. So it'd be nice to give them a reason to consider it. Also also, I am not knowledgeable enough to even know if this is a stupid question, so please be kind.

I saw an old post/comment chain that the stremio + rd + torrentio combo is "technically" legal in the states due to some workaround about distributing vs consuming. You're also not downloading anything or torrenting anything. I know that on their own, Stremio and RD are perfectly legit sites. But adding Torrentio into the mix is where it gets the spicy flavor. Now that some years have passed and that post might be outdated, what are your thoughts now? Is there a case to be made in favor of this being legal?

Not sure if this the right place to ask but since I love sailing the high seas, maybe you guys would know. A preface before the question: I am of the mindset that others' reasons to pirate are their own and any discourse on supporting creators is not productive and financial support should be left to the individual's own devices and morals. It's not for me to judge, blah blah blah.

Anyway, I was thinking about South Park and am wondering how their shift to Paramount+ has been. I wonder if they're making any good profit since not a lot of people have subcriptions and especially so after the whole Colbert thing.

It's been suggested here and there on this sub that a good way to financially support creators, if a pirate wants to do so, is donating directly do them. Does anybody know of a way to do this with bigger creators? If South Park was in any danger of being cancelled due to funding, I was considering this option since I'll never give my money to a streaming service again. Any ideas?

I have heard of this happening, it will probably be something that I'll have to keep in mind actively while I use Windows for now. But yes, the ultimate goal is to make the huge switch to Linux when I can get my hands on a better graphics card. Linux hated my Nvidia :(

Assuming I had the money for it, which graphics card would you recommend? Edit: This is a very viable option that I am willing to try

Long story short here: I tried making Linux my main OS on my PC. I had it dual booted with Win 11 on a separate SSD. Win 11 was going to be solely for work purposes since it was crucial.

However I noticed that I had begun to migrate slowly back to Win 11 because I'm a gamer and Linux just doesn't get along with my graphics card, so games are almost impossible to play well.

I've succumbed to the idea that my PC will just solely run on Win 11. (I do use Linux on a laptop tho). So I got some debloat tools to shut off most of Microsoft's annoying spy shit and manually uninstalled the rest like Cortana. I also have pihole running on my raspi5 so my PC is connected to that, plus I use ProtonVPN. I use Firefox with plugins like ublock, privacy badger, etc.

I want to try to make Windows as private and away from Microsoft's prying eyes as much as possible. Got any other recommendations?

Torrent vs DDL (lemmy.zip)

What makes y'all torrent instead of DDL? I read in the megathread that DDL is less likely to get you caught, but a lot of people on here seem to really enjoy torrenting and I must be completely clueless as to why. I'd like to have your insights

I'm so tired of battlepasses but some games have such cool skins that I do not want to pay for. Is there a way to pirate stuff like that?
