I can see why a large food distributor or supermarket would want this. If all their refrigerators and fridges report back to an alert system they can know when one went down and so avoid the food going bad. When meat goes bad, the smell can be so horrific that customers might feel they should avoid your supermarket for higiene reasons.
So maybe not as stupid as it sounds
