Yes, it’s not a whole lot

It IS a whole lot and a very strong sign of trust that had to be earned.

The military is one of the most intimate things of a nation and what happened here is a very good sign that hopefully sets an example for others.

Firstly: Why does the US have a say in that?

Due to integral parts of the aircraft coming from the US. As stated, the engine is from General Electric, giving the US a lever to block the sale. This is quite common, especially for engines, which are very expensive to develop, and as long as everybody get's along, that's no problem.

That also was a problem for the Russians in their civil aviation when western companies left the market. Even new Russian airplanes had so many parts from America/Europe that they had to first be "Russianised".

In our case here it clearly shows the urgent need again to decouple from the US as fast as possible. Especially in defense, all key parts should be from Europe.

Secondly: Separation from the US new imperialistic ambitions starts at the personal level. Use Deepl instead of Google for translations. The quality is better as well.

Absolutely true!

Not if there is a proper sharing agreement in place before that, something similar to Airbus or so.

Very true! Airbus is a European public company, seated in the Netherlands and controlled by multiple European governments (FR, DE, ES) who together control a blocking minority.

This is exactly what would have to happen to French nuclear weapons, turning them into European nuclear weapons instead.

does not have an agenda of undermining the state and international relations

We relied on that not changing before. We mustn't do it again.

What about a President Le Pen? Then the whole Trump problem repeats.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

I've said it before and will do it again:

For what its worth, the US can have whatever deal they want - if they ensure that Russia pisses off from the entirety of Ukraine, compensates for the caused damages and Zelenskyy can go for a nice evening walk on the beaches of Crimea. And NATO membership.

..and there's nothing wrong with that. We just all (!) need to understand the errors from the past in order to not repeat them. I would have liked him making a slightly more deliberate statement more.

Not doubting his general point. But it is a bit weird of Mr Gomart to pick the Rafale to prove it.

It is precisely what happened there (France leaving the Eurofighter Typhoon programme and doing their own model due to not being able to find a common compromise) that cripples European alternatives and enables American models to dominate our market.

Would we be able to agree on common standardised models, we could have far more for far less and it could be European.

He admires Putin for his approach to shamelessly robbing the wealth of his country into his own pockets and those of his disciples.

That's the world Trump wants to live in. Floating above the law, riches flowing in without having to do something and commoners praising you as a strong leader. It's the dream of a person that tries to outrun the sad truth that he is too weak to be successful when actual competition is around.

help ukraine to hold out until putin is dead or ukraine get nukes.

Why not both?

It's the main takeaway from the last days that America can no longer be relied upon, effectively stripping Europe of its protection. Hence, Europe must provide its own security, both conventional and nuclear, to no longer be reliant on another country and really be safe. This is ultimately the inevitable consequence.

It would be the end of the United States being a relevant world player if they failed to honor the treaty.

Problem is: it would be the end of a free, democratic and peaceful Europe first.

Russia is building up forces for a confrontation with ~~NATO~~Europe

No one should keep thinking for one second that the US would honour the treaty.
