Firstly: Why does the US have a say in that?

Due to integral parts of the aircraft coming from the US. As stated, the engine is from General Electric, giving the US a lever to block the sale. This is quite common, especially for engines, which are very expensive to develop, and as long as everybody get's along, that's no problem.

That also was a problem for the Russians in their civil aviation when western companies left the market. Even new Russian airplanes had so many parts from America/Europe that they had to first be "Russianised".

In our case here it clearly shows the urgent need again to decouple from the US as fast as possible. Especially in defense, all key parts should be from Europe.

Very true! Airbus is a European public company, seated in the Netherlands and controlled by multiple European governments (FR, DE, ES) who together control a blocking minority.

It's the main takeaway from the last days that America can no longer be relied upon, effectively stripping Europe of its protection. Hence, Europe must provide its own security, both conventional and nuclear, to no longer be reliant on another country and really be safe. This is ultimately the inevitable consequence.

It would be the end of the United States being a relevant world player if they failed to honor the treaty.

Problem is: it would be the end of a free, democratic and peaceful Europe first.
