What does it cost? Cant we just use RAID?

Different things for different purposes ... RAID still has bitrot, you could do ZFS but that requires the device to be powered on and constantly scrubbing which can be very inefficient power wise. This is a passive storage device you can power on, write once and read 200 years in the future.
