It's not just media figures saying this, it's literally members of the US government crediting Israel for starting the war. I think Israel's days as a useful US outpost are coming to an end and there's a propaganda campaign to sell the idea to the US public.
It's basically the only way the US can back out of this war without losing too much face or spilling too much of its own blood.
