I once heard someone arguing a similar thing back around 2010, and we already thought it was an odd thing to say. Why, yes, grown people do play video games, and certain mechanics are addictive no matter how old you are.
It's just a very dated critique. Like calling someone satanic for collecting Magic Cards or implying they're a loser for spending a summer driving for Uber. Also just very... anti-fun. Same with the "How dare he lead a class trip to visit China!" What high school student body wouldn't have loved to go on a trip like that?
And also, sometimes you get too into your hobbies. If it was the key to his wood shop or his fishing pole it’d be some relatable joke to boomers. Whether it’s that you just got really sucked into a current project/game or you’re struggling and overdoing it with a healthy coping mechanism (I know when I’m burning out my wife has to remind me to take us time or I will be on my bicycle from the time I get home until it’s too dark to bike). This shit happens sometimes.
For Walz, it was apparently Crazy Taxi, so yeah, you can totally see how that'd happen.
